Every year, the independent research team at Super Lawyers uses a patented multiphase selection process to create the annual Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists. To be considered for one of these awards, an attorney must have a positive standing within their community and receive peer nominations from firm partners and colleagues.
The Super Lawyers team then evaluates each candidate on 12 metrics of professional legal success, which include:

- Honors and awards
- Transactions
- Representative clients
- Bar and professional membership activity
- Scholarly contributions (lectures, writings)

- Education and employment history
- Community and pro bono work
- Other outstanding achievements
Candidates with the highest score tallies from the evaluation process will then be reviewed by the Blue Ribbon Panel, composed of those with the highest scores in their practice area. Because of this intensive and rigorous selection process, it’s estimated that only 5% of all attorneys in each state will be selected to Super Lawyers.
